Grading Vicki Ripley, District 4 Needs a Fresh Voice for the Future
SUNNYSIDE WA – It’s a fair question many in Sunnyside have quietly asked for months: What exactly does Councilwoman Vicki Ripley stand for? More often than not, the answer seems to be… not much.
Councilwoman Ripley, who represents District 4, is known for her personal style—often arriving at meetings in sleeveless tees, displaying tattoos, and frequently wearing sunglasses indoors. She has also been open about her marijuana use. While recreational cannabis is legal in Washington, her willingness to highlight it as part of her public persona raises fair questions about judgment and priorities as an elected official.
Ripley has also expressed support for bringing a marijuana retail shop to Sunnyside — a position that sets her apart from her opponent, Ramon Chavez, who has been clear that he does not support the idea. For many voters, the contrast underscores the choice they face about the city’s direction and values.
Outside of her personal style, Ripley is also known locally for keeping chickens and growing plants in her backyard. However, when it comes to moving the needle for Sunnyside residents, her record appears thin.
Vicki Ripley benefitted from a light turnout election in 2021, and a lack of civic participation, rather than from a strong platform or campaign. Since taking office, she has shown little interest in championing meaningful causes, proposing substantive legislation, or demonstrating a strong understanding of the city’s financial operations—despite her seat on the Subcommittee on Finance and Administrative Services.
Often aligned with Councilwoman Theresa Hancock, Ripley has appeared more like a political sidekick than an independent voice. Her tendency to ask “gotcha” questions during meetings often comes across as performative, particularly when it’s clear she is still working to grasp the complexities of government budgeting—now over two years into her term.
Her bio on the city’s official website provides only minimal personal background: she moved to Sunnyside in 2003, has two sons she’s proud of, and considers Sunnyside her hometown. While that’s a wholesome foundation, what’s missing is any real vision for the future of the city she claims to love.
From her roles on the Board of Parks & Recreation and the Community Development Subcommittee, there has been little in the way of visible leadership or new initiatives. At a time when Sunnyside needs bold ideas and competent leadership, VOS believes she’s missing the mark.

From her seat on the Board of Parks & Recreation and the Community Development Subcommittee, there’s been minimal engagement or initiative. At a time when Sunnyside needs bold ideas and competent leadership, District 4 has too often been left with silence or confusion. Thankfully, there’s a real choice this November!
RAMON CHAVEZ IS A STRONG VOICE FOR SUNNYSIDE’S RESIDENTS

Ramon Chavez, an educator, coach, youth mentor, and family man, has stepped forward to challenge Ripley. Chavez has built a career around service, discipline, and mentorship—exactly the kind of character and clarity District 4 deserves.
This election may be the turning point Sunnyside needs—a chance to replace idle representation with committed leadership. The voters in District 4 will finally have a chance to choose between stagnation and strength.
The future of this community is too important to leave in passive hands.

Wow !! The city of Sunnyside is where I was Raised, my siblings and I thought it to be a treat to come into town and window shop ! Now the city of Sunnyside is so bare downtown no real action going on , a few businesses are trying to bring back the hustle and bustle of before! But it seems certain members on OUR City Council are acting like the city is “theirs”! Hancock for 1 is really needing to be ousted since she has been the ring leader along with Galvan, Vasquez and how sad the Mayor ! You people are more interested in your positions with the city is about just you guys and your personal gain rather the the city and those that voted you in.
Shame on you , I can only count 2 people on my hand that I trust to help run this city Vicky Frausto and Julia Hart respectively!
Our neighboring city’s Grandview is building a new truck stop with resurants and lots of dollars , while no one wants to build in Sunnyside because of our Council and corrupt members. I am open to having a local pot shop being I have stage 3 breast cancer and stage 1 lung council and the gummies are very helpful to me and sure hate giving my money to another city! Thank you and i pray that we’re able to clear the present council and get real honest members that care about OUR city!!
